Replant the Tree
Who’s right?
Who’s wrong?
Endless punditry,
All day long.
No time for complexity, that simply won’t do
When you don’t mind
the taste
of your own
shoe.
Ain’t no glory in shades of gray,
A simple phrase to remember,
An easy motto to say
Is all I want today.
I wanna feel right, and big, and powerful
I wanna take ’em down
Want my words to turn ’em around
And ruin their day
I’m no leader, no hero, no person of influence
I can hide in my privilege until the end of time
What if I’m so shy, or dumb, or poorly spoken
That all I’m meant to do is hide?
So here I sit
With pen and paper
Speaking into the void
And this is all I have to say
Replant the tree
The tree of truth and love
It was chopped down by fear, and hate, and envy
It was hacked at by greed, ignorance, hypocrisy
Stripped by violence and deceit
Replant the tree
So deep in layers of
Empathy and science, logic and integrity
That no wind of the wicked can blow it over,
No lightning of lies can break its bough,
No cult of personality can tear it down.
